What is SSR?
Solid State Relays (SSRs) are electronic switches that control the power supply to other devices seamlessly, similar to a mechanical switch but with electronic activation. Ideal for controlling high-current devices like lights or appliances, SSRs operate with low-current signals, such as a standard DC signal from a Digital Output. They typically activate with voltages of 3V or higher, making them ideal for Phidget Interface Kits or any device featuring digital output capabilities.
SSRs perform the same functions as Mechanical Relays with distinct advantages:
SSRs minimize electromagnetic interference compared to mechanical relays, due to the absence of contact arcing. This leads to cleaner operations as SSRs do not rely on electromagnets.
Unlike mechanical relays that suffer wear and tear from arcing, SSRs enjoy a prolonged lifespan due to their digital internals, enduring millions of cycles.
SSRs operate faster than mechanical relays, with a swift response time of 1ms compared to 10ms.
SSRs demonstrate superior resistance to physical vibrations, a common challenge faced by mechanical relays.
Since SSRs lack mechanical switching components, they function without contact bounce and operate silently.
How does it work?
Internally, control inputs are linked to an LED, which shines onto light sensors across an air gap. These sensors control the transistors that open or close, managing the power supplied to the relay's load. When transistors are closed, current flows smoothly through the relay, establishing a connection between the load and power supply. Conversely, open transistors block current flow, disconnecting the load. This innovative pairing of LED and sensors forms an optocoupler, effectively joining circuit segments without direct electrical linkages.
