What is SSR?
Solid State Relays (SSRs) provide seamless control over power supply to devices, akin to a mechanical switch but with electronic precision. They enable the management of high-current devices using low-current DC signals, making them ideal for integration with Phidget Interface Kits or any digital output apparatus. SSRs activate with a voltage of 3V or higher, ensuring versatile compatibility.
SSRs replicate the functionality of mechanical relays, delivering numerous advantages:
SSRs significantly reduce electromagnetic interference compared to their mechanical counterparts by eliminating contact arcing and electromagnet-induced switching.
Unlike mechanical relays, whose switch contacts degrade from arcing, SSRs boast a longer lifespan owing to their digital design, enduring millions of cycles with ease.
SSRs operate at lightning speed, switching on and off within 1ms, far surpassing the 10ms speed of mechanical relays.
SSRs exhibit superior resilience to physical vibrations compared to mechanical relays.
Operating silently without contact bounce, SSRs ensure smooth, noiseless performance.
How does it work?
Internally linking control inputs to an LED and light sensors, SSRs utilize optocouplers to electrically isolate circuit segments. The LED illuminates an air gap, activating the light sensors which, in turn, toggle transistors. Closed transistors permit current flow, connecting the relay's load to the power supply, whereas open transistors halt current, effectively disconnecting the load.
