What is SSR?
Solid state relays (SSRs) revolutionize power control by electronically switching power on or off, akin to a mechanical switch but without manual interaction. Ideal for controlling high-current devices like lighting or appliances with low-current input signals, such as a typical DC signal from a Digital Output. Most SSRs activate with a minimal voltage of 3V, making them perfect for integration with Phidget Interface Kits or any component featuring a digital output.
SSRs perform the same task as Mechanical Relays, offering the following superior advantages:
- SSRs generate significantly less electromagnetic interference than mechanical relays, primarily due to the absence of contact arcing found in mechanical relays, where internal sparking occurs during switching. Furthermore, SSRs do not rely on electromagnets for switching, contributing to reduced interference.
- Unlike mechanical relays, where switch contacts degrade over time due to arcing, SSRs boast a longer lifespan as their digital internals ensure millions of cycle operations without wear.
- SSRs enable rapid switching, operating at speeds of 1ms compared to the 10ms of mechanical relays.
- SSRs exhibit enhanced resistance to physical vibrations, outperforming mechanical relays.
- The absence of a mechanical switch in SSRs eliminates contact bounce , ensuring silent and seamless operation.
How does it work?
Internally, control inputs connect to an LED, which emits light across an air gap to sensors. These sensors, linked to transistors, manage the relay's power supply. When transistors are closed, the current flows unhindered through the relay, connecting the load to the power supply. When transistors are open, the current is effectively blocked, disconnecting the load from the power source. This LED-to-sensor pairing, known as an optocoupler, is a sophisticated method to interconnect circuit sections without direct electrical links.
