What is SSR?
Solid state relays (SSRs) masterfully control the power supply to devices, functioning like a mechanical switch but with electronic efficiency. Unlike physical switches, SSRs activate electronically, allowing you to control powerful devices like lights or appliances with simple low-current signals. Ideal for use with Phidget Interface Kits or any digital output device, SSRs switch on at just 3V or higher.
SSRs perform the same job as Mechanical Relays, but have the following advantages:
Experience minimal electromagnetic interference with SSRs, thanks to their design that eliminates contact arcing, a common issue in mechanical relays. The absence of electromagnets further reduces interference.
Mechanical relay contacts wear down over time due to arcing. In contrast, our SSRs boast a longer lifespan with purely digital internals, offering millions of cycles when used correctly.
SSRs offer superior speed, switching on and off in just 1ms compared to the 10ms typical of mechanical relays.
SSRs are designed to withstand physical vibrations better than mechanical relays, ensuring reliable performance.
Quiet and efficient, SSRs eliminate contact bounce with their non-mechanical switching mechanism, ensuring silent operation.
How does it work?
SSRs ingeniously use an LED that shines across an air gap onto light sensors connected to transistors. These transistors open or close, controlling the relay's load power flow. The closed transistor allows current to flow, connecting the load to the power supply. When open, it blocks nearly all current, disconnecting the load. This LED-light sensor pair, known as an optocoupler, securely links circuit parts without direct electrical contact.
