What is SSR?
Solid State Relays (SSRs) are innovative devices that electronically control the power flow to other devices, mirroring the function of a mechanical switch but with electronic precision. Unlike traditional switches that rely on human touch, SSRs are actuated electronically, allowing seamless control over high-current devices like lights and appliances, using minimal low-current signals such as a standard DC signal from a Digital Output. SSRs typically activate with voltages starting from 3V, making them ideal for integration with Phidget Interface Kits or any system equipped with a digital output.
SSRs offer the same functionality as Mechanical Relays, but with distinct advantages:
  • SSRs generate significantly less electromagnetic interference compared to mechanical relays, primarily due to the lack of contact arcing found in mechanical relays, where physical contacts spark during switching. The reduction in interference is further enhanced by the absence of electromagnets in SSRs.
  • Unlike mechanical relays whose contacts degrade over time due to arcing, SSRs boast extended longevity with their digital internals, enduring millions of cycles when used properly.
  • SSRs switch on and off with remarkable speed (1ms), surpassing the slower 10ms of mechanical relays.
  • SSRs are more robust against physical vibrations, offering reliability where mechanical relays may falter.
  • With no mechanical switch inside, SSRs are immune to contact bounce and operate in complete silence, providing a serene operational environment.

How does it work?
Internally connected to an LED, the control inputs emit light across an air gap to light sensors, which in turn connect to transistors. These transistors determine the flow of current, either bridging the relay's load to the power supply or isolating it. When a transistor is closed, the current flows seamlessly through the relay, linking the load and power supply. Conversely, when a transistor is open, it restricts nearly all current, disconnecting the load from the power source. This LED-light sensor pair, known as an optocoupler, effectively links two parts of a circuit without direct electrical contact.
