What is SSR?
Solid State Relays (SSRs) efficiently manage power supply to devices, akin to a mechanical switch but with electronic precision. Instead of manual operation, these relays leverage electronic switching to control high-current outputs like lighting or appliances with minimal signals, such as a standard DC signal from a Digital Output. SSRs activate with a voltage as low as 3V, making them perfect companions for Phidget Interface Kits or any digital output-equippeddevices.
While SSRs maintain the same functional role as Mechanical Relays, they offer substantial advantages:
  • SSRs markedly reduce electromagnetic interference compared to mechanical relays, largely due to the absence of contact arcing -a phenomenon typical in mechanical relays where physical contact sparks arise. This reduced interference is also due to the use of electronic switching instead of electromagnets.
  • Unlike mechanical relays whose contacts degrade over time due to arcing, SSRs boast longer lifespans with purely digital internals, ensuring millions of reliable cycles.
  • SSRs exhibit faster switching times, activating in 1ms compared to 10ms for mechanical relays.
  • They are inherently more resilient to physical vibrations than their mechanical counterparts.
  • With no mechanical switch inside, SSRs eliminate contact bounce and provide silent operation.

How does it work?
Internally, a control input connects to an LED, which projects across an air gap to light sensors. These sensors control transistors that open or close, managing the relay's load power supply. A closed transistor allows current flow, connecting the load with power. Conversely, when open, current flow is obstructed.This mechanism effectively isolates the load from the power supply. The LED and light sensor pairing, known as an optocoupler, facilitates circuit interfacing without direct electrical linkage.
